Route Rationale
The Thompson – Okanagan area is one of the most biodiverse regions in British Columbia. It is home to approximately 450 different species of bird, some of which are exclusive only to this particular area.
Birdwatching is a great hobby for all ages! Whether you are a dedicated birdwatcher, or just like to take photos, it is great way to get away outdoors, go for a drive. Take a scenic walk, go hiking or biking…just don’t forget to take your camera along.
This is a full circle tour route that takes you from Kamloops, to the Shuswap and Okanagan areas then back. An added benefit to having the route be a full circle, is that the points we chose all can act as a starting point based on where the visitor is arriving from and then back to the original starting point, all the while seeing new sites along the way.
Kamloops is a hub within BC as many different highways intersect this allows for visitors to start and end who might be coming from the lower mainland or Caribou Chilcotin. Salmon Arm/ Enderby have a better access for visitors coming from the east. With Vernon having access to the south, and close to the Kelowna Airport
Total Drive Time: 3 hours, 45 min
Total Distance: Approximately: 310 km – round trip
An additional benefit to this route is that it takes you through towns that offer many different experiences so if the visitor had the time they could stop for a day at each spot and enjoy what each location has to offer, however if the visitor was tight on time they could get it done within a day.
